Dead Cells

The progressive exploration of an interconnected world.

Dead Cells is an action platformer made by Motion Twin. In practical terms Dead Cells is an attempt at combining the progressive exploration of a Metroidvania, with the high stakes replayability of a Rogue-lite. On the game design side of things, we’ve got the monsters, combat and loot system down. All of this takes place in hand designed levels that are proceduraly assembled each run, meaning you never know where the secrets are or exactly where you’re going. Special powers that unlock new areas and paths, secret rooms, big boss battles and character progression, with randomised loot, permadeath, fast paced punishing combat and massive replayability.

Dead Cells Review

8.2 Total Score
Very Good

Dead Cells is beautifully colourful and detailed 2D roguelike game that took level design tips from Castlevania and captured the combat feel of a Dark Souls or Bloodborne game. The fluid, fast-paced combat makes up the core gameplay, and thankfully Dead Cells has excellent combat. You start off in a dungeon with a basic sword, and the choice between a bow and arrow or shield. Luckily, both options are fun, because the game's combat is really satisfying. To be successful in combat, you’ll need to pay attention, and learn enemy patterns, and keep your fingers crossed and hope to get some good loot. During each run of the game, the loot and stat bonuses you acquire are only going to last this run, and when you die you lose all of it. Enemies are varied and challenging with the occasional super-powered elite taking the stage, with plenty of unique abilities and well built combat interaction. From its fantastic atmosphere to its superb combat, Dead Cells is on a good way to become a resounding success. If you enjoy Rouge-like games and/or the Souls series of games, this game is for you.
